- Jagex has added first new skill for RuneScape 3 in four years

Released back in 2001, RuneScape is an MMORPG known for its quests and deep skill system. RuneScape has been around for quite a while, but Jagex has kept the iconic MMORPG going strong. Jagex maintains both its Old School Runescape and RuneScape 3 severs, with both receiving regular updates. In a recent update, Jagex has added RuneScape 3's first new skill in four years: archaeology.

The amount of players that RuneScape 3 has is far fewer than its counterpart, Old School RuneScape. Jagex has tried to revitalize the modern version of their game before, like through the launch of RuneScape mobile—though, RuneScape 3 still couldn't compete with Old School RuneScape and its own mobile version. This new skill may be another way for RuneScape 3 to compete.

Archaeology, however, allows RuneScape 3 players to enter 2020 with the assurance that there is a host of new content coming their way. Especially since 2020 also promises a number of quests, including a City of Senntisten quest and a planned Azzanadra quest. Archaeology goes live today as part of arguably the biggest update to Runescape since the Invention skill launched back in 2016. After 18 months in development it has changed a great deal since its inception, with ideas like archaeomancy and time travel among the potential mechanics early on, but Philpott is definitely satisfied with the finished product. “It’s nice to look back and see where we started and where we are now. And we’re just so happy with it.”

Archaeology brings the total number of player skills up to 28. The last skill, Invention, was introduced back in January 2016, with Divination being added to RuneScape in mid 2013. Jagex made the announcement at this year’s RuneFest fan festival where it also unveiled new content for Old School RuneScape as well as improvements made to the modern mobile version of its MMO.
